Bradykinesia
Bradykinesia simply means slowness of movement. It can be quite problematic for many people who live with Parkinson's. Signs of Bradykinesia include:
-
A change in walking from a normal gait to shuffle-like steps
-
A change in handwriting from large letters to increasingly smaller letters
-
Difficulty getting in and out of bed
-
Fatigue because tasks take longer to accomplish
-
Movement that starts fine but slowly deteriorates
-
Change in speech and vocal projection
Tips to Manage Bradykinesia
Regular exercise, physical therapy, and medication are the most common ways to manage slow movement. With supervision from your medical provider and physical therapist, you can create exercise practices that may help with improving speed for walking. By challenging your normal gait, these exercises can improve your ability to walk.
