The tulip has been an internationally recognized symbol of Parkinson's disease awareness since 1980.

It was created by Dutch horticulturist J.W.S. Van der Wereld, who was living with Parkinson's. He developed a new red and white tulip variety and named it the "Dr. James Parkinson" tulip in honor of the English physician who first described the disease in 1817.

While the tulip has been informally associated with Parkinson's for decades, it was officially adopted as the global symbol in 2005. Today, it represents hope, strength, and perseverance, and is a powerful symbol of awareness, research, and community worldwide.
